So you wondered who's behind all those different 118 directory enquiry
numbers in the UK and how much they cost? Well, here's a humble attempt
to get together useful information about the available directory enqueries.
Below you'll find 48 numbers,
- far more than currently available on the official
Ofcom site. Click here why.
To start cutting through the 118 confusion, you'll have to know there
are four fundamentally different ways of charging:
|
Type
I
|
Simple per-minute charge.
This is a straight forward service where you're charge
is calculated depending on how long you are connected to the service
(including call connect). Calls are billed per second and no minimum
charge or hidden charges apply. For example 118 247 will charge
you 40ppm (pence per minute), but if you only talk to them for 30
seconds, then you will only be charged 20p. |
|
Type
II
|
Simple Fixed charge per call.
This is also straight forward. No matter how long
you talk to the agent, you will be charged a fixed fee. This is
good if you don't know the exact address and it takes you a few
guesses to get to the number. No call connect is available on this
type of service. All providers limit the number of searches you're
allowed to ask, for example 118 288 allows you to search for up
to three numbers |
|
|
Per-minute charge plus one-off fixed charge
at the start of the call.
The first available combo. Here you're billed by
the second as in type I, but on top you're always charged an additional
fee no matter how long you talk. This is a convenient way for the
suppliers to offer call connect, for example 118 118 charges a low
per-minute rate of 9ppm, but puts a premium of 49p on top no matter
how long you talk. The 9ppm rate is maintained through the entire
call connect conversation. |
|
Type
IV
|
Fixed charge for the first minute plus a per-minute
charge for all other minutes.
The second available combo. Different to type III,
here the first minute is a fixed charge and if you call for longer
than a minute an additional charge applies, billed per second. This
allows to effectively enforce a minimum charge, for example 118
080 charges 50p for the first minute and 50ppm (billed per second)
after that. |
With this in mind, jump straight to the table of 118 numbers below. The
two colored columns show the cost of...
| a sample call of 45 seconds |
or
|
a sample call of 90 seconds |
All prices are for calls from a BT landline.

Other 118 news
- OFCOM has released the June review of Directory Enquiries Services with the following conclusions:
- 87% of all numbers requested in response to a realistic profile of enquiries were given correctly.
- Calls were answered by an advisor within an average of 8 seconds.
- Typical call duration was under 1 minute.
- There is no direct correlation between a provider's accuracy and its cost. Some of the most accurate services were also the cheapest.
- If you need a number while you're looking at this page, try it online
for
free from BT here.
DQ is dead. Long live DQ.
Directory Inquiries (DQ) in it's previous uniform 192 face has ceased
to exist. Now when you dial 192 you'll be able to hear a free phone
number (0800 321 070) where you get one number chosen at random from
the pool of available 118 numbers.
What are the rates if I dial 118 from
my mobile?
This one is a bit tricky. Generally, mobile operators are not very
forthcoming with their pricing plans for special services. However,
I've found most of the information so far. Click on the below relevant
network operator.
Why aren't all the above
numbers on the official
Ofcom site?
The newdirectoryenquiries.com
site is an initiative created by the DQ-IWG – an Ofcom supported committee
of the various DQ providers. I'm told that their website is not open
to new entries. Furthermore it is a paid listing which includes a mass
mailing of a leaflet containing the same information which BT have agreed
to mail in their BT Phone Book. That's why you don't find all the numbers
on the official Ofcom site.
Thank you to ...
- ... John for the adjusted 118 707 rate.
- ... Quentin for the adjusted 118 848 rate.
- ... Paul for the 118 019 find.
